Facebook is a social networking site whose popularity has exploded in recent years. There is a huge amount of customization within the Facebook framework, but it is not designed for you to leave or take anything away. Up until recently there was no way of deleting your own account.
There used to be unofficial backup tools, but they were taken down for violating Facebook's TOS. Now there is an official backup tool: Go to Account Settings, and then click "Download your Data" There is also a Facebook app called Command Line that lets you interact with Facebook from the command line: http://apps.facebook.com/cmdline/
Former unofficial Backup tools
- FriendCSV exports your contacts to CSV files.
- Facedown downloads photo albums from Facebook.
This leaves wall, profile information and the plethora of Facebook apps out in the cold. Perhaps a backup app could be written for Facebook from within Facebook using the applications framework.
