Ello is a social-networking website which markets itself as an ad-free Facebook alternative. Ello launched as an invite-only public beta in April 2014 and became popular in late September 2014.
Ello's current business model is unclear. Their help page says:
Ello is completely free to use.
Very soon we will begin offering special features to our users. If we create a special feature that you like, you can choose to pay a very small amount of money to add it to your Ello account forever. We believe that everyone is unique and that we all want and need different things from a social network. So, we are going to offer all sorts of ways for users to customize their Ello experience.
The vast majority of Ello's features, the ones that all of us use every day, are always going to be free, and we'll keep improving them. When you choose to pay a small amount of money for a new feature, you help support Ello as an ad-free network and help us make it better and better.
In January 2014, Ello took a $435,000 round of seed funding from FreshTracks Capital.
On Octuber 23, 2014, Ello raised $5.5 million in VC money. Additionally, the company has registered itself in Delaware as a "public benefit corporation", drawing up a "legally binding charter that says that the company can never run ads, never sell user data, and never be acquired by a company who would make them do either of those two things."
Downloading your data
As of October 2014, there is no export function, although it might be available in the future.
A raw copy of a user's posts can be retrieved by appending ".json" to their profile URL (e.g. https://ello.co/textfiles.json). User-uploaded images can be manually searched for in the json file. As of February 2015, this seems to be disabled.
